Who Is the Woman in the Logo?

Seshat, Ancient Egypt

The woman who is in our logo is Seshat. She was credited with inventing writing and also was known for being the “goddess of sciences, accounting, architecture, astronomy, astrology, building, mathematics, and surveying.” Her name literally reads “Female Scribe.” While we originally envisioned the paper to be more writing focused, we are aware that most of our attention-spans are totally shot, and things aren’t what they used to be. In an attempt to fix this, we have changed the paper to be more arts and visual focused, blending traditional newspaper formatting with magazine formatting. But, the name stuck, and “The Scribe” was kept. When coming up with a theme for the publication, Dylan and I brainstormed something that we believed was completely unique. An arts themed newspaper that was Ancient Egyptian themed! We set out to not just make any old newspaper, and instead wanted to try and make something that had never been done before.

There is virtually no existing art of Seshat! One thing that Dylan and I set out to do, was to commission Ohio artists to make more art of her. Shown to the right is her Ancient Egyptian depiction, which we attempted to modernize but keep faithful. Her “staff” is actually a palm stem!

Do You Really Pay The Artists Featured?

We really do pay the artists and other people featured in each edition of The Scribe. Our core belief is that artists should be making as much money as they can, and we are there to help them accomplish this. We never make money off any artist involved in the paper, and instead, we gift them money at the end of the month. The money comes from our accumulated donations for that month specifically. A percentage goes into what we call “The Artist Fund” which is money specifically set aside to be distributed to all of the featured artists for that specific edition. This can range from $10… to $100! The Scribe would not exist without the artists, authors, writers, etc. so it is in our best interests to ensure everyone is able to keep creating. Creating art is the most SOULFUL and HUMAN aspect of ourselves. To take a blank canvas and create is something only Humans can do. We want to support that notion and ensure those who are brave enough to create, are the ones who are compensated.
